Post frame buildings and pole buildings are popular construction options for barns, detached garages, hobby shops, and other farm buildings in Coeur d’Alene. Although they share many qualities in common, they are not technically the same.

Pole Barns in Coeur d’Alene

“Pole Barn” is a common term often mistakenly used to refer to both pole barns and post frame barns or buildings. Pole barns are built using round poles as the primary structure to sustain the walls and roof of the barn. Older pole barns (like the one your grandfather built in the 1950s or earlier) were most often built using round logs or maybe even used telephone poles if they were available.

Post Frame Buildings

Post frame buildings are the modern equivalent of older pole barns. The only significant difference between a pole building in Coeur d’Alene and a post frame building is that modern post frame buildings are built using square posts––not round poles.

Square posts are better for construction because you can make a stronger connection between a square post and a flat board than between a round pole and a flat board. Today’s post frame buildings are a big step forward from older construction designs, but not significantly more expensive.

Tricky Terminology

It is probable that most people will continue to refer to post frame buildings as pole buildings for a long time––but that’s no big deal. Just make sure that you use the best materials and design available when you choose to build. At MQS, Inc., we only use the highest quality lumber and materials for all of our builds.
